Tirupati Balaji Temple

Set in the Tirumala hills, this is among the most visited and richly endowed places of worship in the world. The temple of Sri Venkateswara crowns the seventh peak of the Tirumala hills, drawing tens of thousands of pilgrims every day. The deity, a form of Vishnu, is worshipped as the lord who relieves the burdens of the age. Its scale, antiquity and unbroken ritual tradition make it a centre of Vaishnava devotion across the subcontinent.

Going there, and what the town asks of you

2 days suggestedHow long to stay is our suggestion, not a temple-published figure. No shrine publishes a length of visit — group the stops to suit your own party.

7 stops · our grouping

First — up the hill, and the darshan

  • Alipiri

The foot of the Tirumala hills, where the walk up begins. Pilgrims under a vow climb from here; the road up starts from the same place.

Where — at the foot of the hill, on the northern edge of Tirupati town.
  • Kalyanakatta

The tonsure hall on the hill. Devotees give their hair here as a vow before going for darshan.

Where — on Tirumala, before the temple.
  • Swami Pushkarini

The temple tank beside the shrine.

Where — immediately beside the temple.
  • Sri Bhu Varaha Swamy Temple

A shrine on the bank of the Pushkarini, next to the main temple. Where it falls in a pilgrim's day is set out on TTD's own site — take the order from there.

Where — on the bank of the Pushkarini, next to the main temple.
  • Vaikuntam Queue Complex

The interconnected queue halls that feed the sanctum. Darshan is issued in categories — a general line and several booked ones — and the category you hold decides your entrance. Book, and check which is open, on TTD's own site before you travel.

    Where — adjoining the temple.
  • The sanctum

Darshan of Sri Venkateswara, on the seventh peak of Tirumala.

Where — at the end of the queue complex.
  • The hundi, then the laddu counter

Offerings go into the hundi inside the temple. The laddu prasadam is collected at the counters on the way out.

Where — on the exit path from the sanctum.

Next — down the hill: the town, then Tiruchanur

  • Sri Kapileswara Swamy Temple

The Shiva temple at the foot of the hills, beside the Kapila Teertham waterfall.

Where — at the base of the Tirumala hills, on the town's edge.
  • Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple

The large TTD temple in the middle of Tirupati town, its gopuram the landmark of the town centre.

Where — in Tirupati town itself.
  • Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Tiruchanur

The temple of Venkateswara's consort. Tradition holds that a Tirumala pilgrimage is completed by her darshan, not by his alone — which is why it stands last here.

Where — in the plain beyond the town.
When to come

The rhythm of the year

Brahmotsavam is the fullest the hill gets, and falls in Purattasi / Ashwayuja (September–October). TTD publishes the year's dates and the festival's length on its own site — take both from there.

The rite it is known for

Mundan — the tonsure offering

Kalyanakatta, on Tirumala hill

Devotees shave their heads and give the hair to the deity as a vow. It is the offering Tirumala is best known for.

What the locality asks of you

The town around the gates

  • Tirumala and Tirupati are two different places. The shrine is on the hill; the trains, the flights and most of the town are below it.
  • You go up on foot or by road, and both arrive in the same hill town. There is more than one stepped footpath up — TTD's own site sets out the routes and where each one starts.
  • TTD runs the lodging, the free meals and the whole queue system on the hill itself.
  • Phones and cameras are not carried into the temple; cloakrooms are provided before the queue.
  • Srikalahasti, a well-known Shiva temple, is the usual onward stop from Tirupati.

What the shrine itself publishes

Every line below was read off a page the trust runs, on the day named beside it. Timings and fees change. Check the source before you travel.

Map and model

The temple, mapped

A compact granite temple on a hill, wrapped in two walled walking circuits, with a gold-covered tower over the sanctum. Almost every visitor reaches it through a long queue complex outside the walls.

Schematic plan of Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple, Tirumala. 12 spots, numbered in walking order. Not to scale.

Stop 1 of 12 · Queue complex

Vaikuntam Queue Complex

This is the covered waiting hall where the darshan queue starts. Devotees sit in numbered rooms until their turn comes, then walk on through linked halls to the temple. Two such complexes were built, one in 1983 and one in 2000.

Where it is

It stands outside the temple, on the approach to the Maha Dwaram. TTD uses its waiting compartments for the free Sarva Darshan queue before devotees move toward the temple.

Visitor tip

Food, milk, tea and a medical room are provided free inside while you wait, so you do not need to leave the queue.
