Mahakaleshwar Temple
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, famed for the Bhasma Aarti, the sacred ash offering to Mahakala. The temple lists Bhasma Aarti as a separate service. The Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, revered as the south-facing seat of Mahakala, Shiva as the Lord of Time. Its Bhasma Aarti offers sacred ash to the Lord, evoking the transience of life and liberation beyond death. The shrine stands beside the holy Rudrasagar lake, and Ujjain celebrates the Simhastha Kumbh Mela. Its committee publishes a separate Bhasma Aarti service and describes the Mahakal Mahalok corridor. Confirm current entry and access before travelling.

Look-alike booking sites and apps
Look-alike websites and pages use names like Mahakaleshwar Bhakt Niwas or a tourism-style hotel listing, take an advance for a room and sometimes a Bhasma Aarti pass, then show no booking when the pilgrim arrives.
What to do. Book rooms and darshan only on the temple committee site or a government-approved portal. If a site looks unofficial, stop payment and tell Mahakal police, the cyber cell, or helpline 1930.

People posing as priests or guides
Someone who says they used to work at the temple, or a contact passed on by relatives, asks for an advance to arrange Bhasma Aarti or VIP darshan. After the money is sent, the number goes silent.
What to do. Do not pay a private number for temple entry. Use only official booking channels for Bhasma Aarti and other services.

Crowd theft and snatching
In the temple, at Harsiddhi crossing, and along the Mahakal procession, thieves take wallets, phones, and gold chains from people packed in the crowd.
What to do. Keep phones and jewellery zipped and in front of you in queues and on the procession route. If something is taken, tell the temple desk and Mahakal police so CCTV can be checked.

At the gates
“VIP” and “quick darshan” passes
Sellers offer Bhasma Aarti or VIP entry slips at a high price. Some reuse or alter old temple tickets; the pass fails at the gate.
What to do. Take Bhasma Aarti and Sheeghra Darshan only through the temple's own booking. If a slip is not issued by the temple, do not pay for it.
