Kamakshi Amman Temple

One of the three main Shakti Peethams, where Kamakshi is worshipped in her graceful, smiling form. Kamakshi Amman is one of the three most important Shakti Peethams in India, alongside Varanasi and Kalighat. The deity is unique — depicted smiling, holding a sugarcane bow and flower arrows.

In the darshan queue

  • “VIP” and “quick darshan” passes

People sell or collect money for “special darshan” tickets or advance booking. The shrine itself says it does not issue those tickets and does not charge for darshan.

What to do. Stand in the free queue. Do not buy a special or VIP darshan pass from anyone outside or in the line. Paid sevas, if you want them, are listed on the temple site.

Where: the darshan queue and the temple precincts. Official advisory. Reported by 2 sources, 2022.

    • “No such special darshan tickets are sold in the temple and no charges are collected from devotees for darshan.”

Inside the complex

  • Donation collectors who are not from the temple

Money is taken for sevas or offerings without a temple receipt. The shrine lists fixed seva rates and asks that they be paid only at its own cash desk.

What to do. Pay only at the Devasthanam office cash counter and keep the official receipt. Kind gifts also need the temple’s own staff, not a person who approaches you in the hall.

Where: inside the temple, near the counters and sanctum. Official advisory. One official advisory.

    • “Devotees are advised to pay the charges for the sevas they want to perform at Devasthanam office cash counter and obtain official receipts.”

In the market

  • Prices well above the going rate

After darshan, shops in the temple town sell cheaper sarees billed as Kanchipuram silk that use fake zari. Visitors who come only to buy silk sometimes take those pieces home.

What to do. Buy from cooperative society shops or long-known stores. Ask how the zari is checked rather than following a street offer of a low price.

Where: silk shops in Kanchipuram town. Reported in the news. Reported by one source, 2026.

    • “However, some of the wholesale traders said there are shops which sell fake silk sarees with fake zari.”
