Other things visitors have reported
Strangers near the temple, ghats, or rooftop cafes offer snacks, drinks, or cigarettes. In tourist areas of India this has been used to spike food or drink and then steal cash, phones, and papers.
What to do. Buy your own food and drinks. Do not take anything offered by a stranger, and do not leave a glass unattended.

“Be wary of accepting drinks or food from strangers or leaving drinks unattended.”

Prices well above the going rate
Auto-rickshaw drivers near the temple offer a cheap or free ride, then detour to craft, gem, or textile shops that pay them a commission.
What to do. Agree the fare to your actual stop before you sit down and say you do not want shop visits. Use a prepaid stand or an app auto if one is available.

Rigged auto fare old city
Autos waiting near the temple may run a broken or fast meter, or take a long way through side streets, then ask far more than the usual old-city fare.
What to do. Fix the price before the ride starts. Use a prepaid kiosk or an app auto when you can.

Other things visitors have reported
A well-dressed local starts a friendly chat near the temple and steers it toward cheap gems that can supposedly be resold abroad at a profit. The stones are usually low-grade or synthetic.
What to do. Do not buy gems from anyone who approaches you on the street. If you want jewellery, go only to a government-certified shop and ask for a bill.

Donation collectors who are not from the temple
Someone posing as a priest or temple worker applies a tilak or gives a short blessing without being asked, then presses for a large donation.
What to do. Decline marks or blessings you did not request. If you wish to give, use an official donation box at the gate rather than cash pressed into a stranger’s hand.

Charges to leave shoes, phones or bags
Shoes must come off before entry. Some visitors are steered to pay a man to watch shoes at the steps, even though lockers exist and the extra payment is not required.
What to do. Use the lockers if they are open. A paid watcher at the steps is optional; you can leave shoes with the attendants without adding a fee.
