Jagdish Temple

Around the town

  • Other things visitors have reported

Strangers near the temple, ghats, or rooftop cafes offer snacks, drinks, or cigarettes. In tourist areas of India this has been used to spike food or drink and then steal cash, phones, and papers.

What to do. Buy your own food and drinks. Do not take anything offered by a stranger, and do not leave a glass unattended.

Auto-rickshaw drivers near the temple offer a cheap or free ride, then detour to craft, gem, or textile shops that pay them a commission.

What to do. Agree the fare to your actual stop before you sit down and say you do not want shop visits. Use a prepaid stand or an app auto if one is available.

A well-dressed local starts a friendly chat near the temple and steers it toward cheap gems that can supposedly be resold abroad at a profit. The stones are usually low-grade or synthetic.

What to do. Do not buy gems from anyone who approaches you on the street. If you want jewellery, go only to a government-certified shop and ask for a bill.
