The rite itself

Each of the nine graha deities is invoked individually with its own mantra and offered flowers, rice, turmeric, sandalwood paste and a graha-specific coloured cloth, closed with a havan of at least nine ahutis (traditionally up to 108).

  • Navadhanya — nine grains (wheat, paddy, pigeon pea, hyacinth bean, chickpea, mung bean, sesame, black gram, horse gram)
  • Nine coloured cloths, one per graha
  • Sandalwood paste, flowers, fruit
  • Ghee and sacred woods (arka, palash, khadir) for the havan

Where it belongs

Suryanar Kovil, administered by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE department, is the only temple in Tamil Nadu with a separate shrine to each of the nine planetary deities — the reason it, rather than a general Vishnu or Shiva temple, is the traditional seat of this specific rite.
