A long pillared hall with 124 pillars, standing outside the temple wall. The carvings show the wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar along with other gods. It is the first temple building most visitors walk through.

Charges to leave shoes, phones or bags
Phones and footwear must be left before entry. Private stands around the perimeter charge for shoes and phones, while the temple also runs lockers at each gopuram.
What to do. Use the official lockers at each gopuram gate. The HR and CE department has said the phone deposit at this temple is Rs 5. Keep the token to collect your items.

At the entrance, a person who pushed a wheelchair asked for extra cash for that help. Police at the gate also delayed entry for a devotee using calipers.
What to do. Ask temple or police staff at the gate for help with a wheelchair. Do not pay a private helper who demands a fee to push the chair.

In the darshan queue
“VIP” and “quick darshan” passes
Helpers offer faster or VIP-style darshan for money, while the temple itself issues VIP passes from its office and runs separate free and paid queues. People also try to enter the VIP line without that pass.
What to do. Join the free queue or buy the temple’s own special-entry ticket at the counters. VIP entry is a pass from the temple office, not from someone at the gate. Boards should state that touts are not allowed to offer services.

Look-alike booking sites and apps
Third-party sites use famous Tamil Nadu temple names so pilgrims pay for puja, darshan or donations thinking the money goes to the shrine. For Meenakshi, the temple has said only its government HR and CE site is official.
What to do. Use only https://maduraimeenakshi.hrce.tn.gov.in/ for online services and donations. Pay at temple counters or the official payment gateway, and treat any other Meenakshi booking or donation site as unofficial.

Crowd theft and snatching
During car festival and consecration crowds on the streets around the temple, thieves take gold chains and other valuables, often from older women leaving the crush.
What to do. Keep jewellery covered or leave it at your lodging on festival days. Stay alert on South Masi Street and the four processional streets, and report loss at South Gate police.
