Mahabodhi Temple

Inside the complex

  • People posing as priests or guides

People in monk robes walk the Mahabodhi Temple grounds and ask pilgrims and tourists for cash. Some take offerings that belong in the temple boxes.

What to do. Put gifts only in the temple donation boxes or on the official Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee donation page. Do not hand cash to anyone in robes unless shrine staff confirm they are authorised.

    • “The proposed corrective measures also include an awareness campaign to educate visitors about the fake monk menace and the distribution of multilingual information material and signages advising them not to hand over offerings to unauthorised monks.”

The Times of India · Reported in the news · 21 March 2026 · we opened this page on 10 September 2026

Prabhat Khabar · Reported in the news · 28 March 2026 · quoted in Devanagari · we opened this page on 10 September 2026

  • Donation collectors who are not from the temple

Pilgrims sometimes give cash or gold to people in robes or to people on the grounds instead of putting it in the locked donation boxes. That money often never reaches the temple fund.

What to do. Use the locked donation boxes on the premises or the official online donation form on bodhgayatemple.com. Do not hand cash, gold, or foreign notes to anyone who walks up and asks.

The Times of India · Reported in the news · 2 March 2015 · we opened this page on 10 September 2026

  • Prices well above the going rate

Sellers offer peepal leaves as leaves from the sacred Bodhi tree, often at a much higher price to foreign pilgrims. Temple officials say some leaves come from other peepal trees in the complex.

What to do. Do not buy leaves from children or vendors who chase you on the grounds. If you want a leaf, ask shrine staff whether it is sold through an authorised counter.

    • “Earlier, a criminal case was instituted against a former chief priest of the shrine for allegedly being involved in the felling of a branch of the sacred Bodhi tree and selling its leaves and twigs at fancy prices, mostly in foreign currency.”

    • “Besides the holy Bodhi tree, there are six other peepal trees inside the Mahabodhi complex and the temple authorities say these children often collect and sell leaves from other trees to unsuspecting pilgrims.”

BBC News · Reported in the news · 4 March 2013 · we opened this page on 10 September 2026

  • Crowd theft and snatching

Thieves work the temple grounds and take cash from pilgrims, especially foreign visitors. Police have also reported items taken from the premises.

What to do. Keep cash and cards in an inner pocket. Do not leave bags or shoes unwatched. If something is taken, go to Bodh Gaya police station on the same visit.

On the road in

  • Prices well above the going rate

E-rickshaw and auto fares in Bodh Gaya are often not on a posted rate, so drivers quote a high price to visitors and then argue at the end of the ride.

What to do. Agree the fare before you sit down. For a shared ride from Gaya, a common range is about ₹50; a private auto is often ₹200–250. During Pitru Paksha, ask the district rate card.

In the market

  • Crowd theft and snatching

In the crowded local market near the temple, someone in a crowd can lift a bag. Locals also report chain snatching in busy streets.

What to do. Keep bags in front of you and avoid hanging phones or jewellery. If a bag is taken, report it at Bodh Gaya police station and ask staff to check nearby CCTV.

Around the town

  • Other things visitors have reported

On the streets leading to the temple, rickshaw drivers and groups of children may follow visitors step by step and press for a ride or a gift.

What to do. A calm no and keep walking is enough. Use a pre-agreed rickshaw fare if you need a ride. Give, if you wish, through a monastery or the official temple donation channel, not to people who stop you on the road.
