Chamundeshwari Temple

On the road in

  • Prices well above the going rate

Unauthorised stalls on the road up to the temple, at the parking stretch, and near the Mahishasura statue sell drinks, puja goods and snacks above ordinary city prices. One RTI-based report put a half-litre water bottle at Rs 38.

What to do. Buy only what you need, compare prices, and use the designated stalls in the commercial complex if they are open. Carry water from town, as the hill is a no-plastic zone and shops on the slope are limited.

  • Hill auto taxi overcharge

Autos and taxis on the Chamundi Hill road often skip the meter and quote a high flat fare, especially from the railway station, bus stand, or after a temple visit. City police have said overcharging of tourists drops when uniformed patrols are visible.

What to do. Use prepaid taxi counters at Mysuru railway station and the bus stand, or book an app cab with a shown fare. If you take an auto, agree the fare before you sit down. KSRTC buses run from the city bus stand to the hill.

Inside the complex

  • Prices well above the going rate

Some ritual services at the hill temples are billed far above the listed rate. One example reported to the district meeting is Benne Alankara, listed at Rs. 100 but charged at Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000.

What to do. Check the approved seva list on the notice boards the authority is putting up, and book sevas only through the temple site or the Karnataka endowments portal. Ask for a receipt in the name of the Executive Officer.

  • Donation collectors who are not from the temple

Inside the sanctum, a collection plate for aarti offerings has been held in front of devotees, and sometimes kept on the hundi, so money goes to the plate instead of the temple box. Unauthorised helpers have also been used to collect in the same way.

What to do. Put cash only in the temple hundi, or send donations to the Executive Officer and take a receipt. You do not have to place money on a plate to complete darshan.

Where: inside the sanctum, at the offering box. Official advisory. Reported by 2 sources, 2018.

Parking and drop-off

  • Other things visitors have reported

People stop visitor vehicles at the foot of Chamundi Hills, collect a parking fee, and hand out yellow tokens marked Chamundi Hills, saying they hold a tender. District officials have said no such tender or permission was issued.

What to do. Do not pay roadside collectors at the foothills. Use the official temple parking on the hill and take a printed or online receipt, or leave the vehicle in town and take a KSRTC bus from the Mysuru city bus stand.
