  • Crowd theft and snatching

Phone theft, chain snatching, and other petty crime are often reported in the temple crowd. On Girivalam, especially at night or at isolated rest spots, gangs have also robbed jewellery and then demanded more money.

What to do. Keep phones and jewellery close and out of sight in queues and on the walk. Stay on the lit main path; do not pause at isolated rocks or forest edges. Report theft at once to nearby police. A dedicated temple police station now covers the Mada streets.

Autos in town often have no meter and no fixed fare. Some drivers quote a high price to visitors, or start as a helper and later demand money as a guide.

What to do. Agree the fare before you sit down. If the price is too high, walk to the next auto. Do not accept an unsolicited guide who starts with directions or temple history.
